In 1954, Idaho banned all forms of casino gaming and gambling. "Cactus Pete" Piersanti moved his slot machine operations to Jackpot, less than 1 mile from the Idaho-Nevada border. 

The establishment was born under the name Cactus Pete's Desert Lodge. This establishment and the Horseshoe Club are credited with founding the town of Jackpot.

In 1991, the establishment underwent a major expansion, converting it into a hotel and casino. It became one of the largest gaming venues in Elko. The expansion added a 10-story hotel tower, restaurants, and an Olympic-size swimming pool.

In 1993, Ameristar Casinos, the parent company of Cactus Pete's, was founded. And in August 2013, the property was taken over by Pinnacle Entertainment, which purchased Ameristar Casinos. 

Finally, in 2016 the property was sold to Gaming Leisure Properties and leased back to Pinnacle. And in 2018, Cactus Pete's operations were acquired by Penn National Gaming.
