History & Facts

Bally's Las Vegas was built on the site occupied by the former Bonanza Hotel and Casino since 1963 and opened in 1973 under the name MGM Grand Hotel and Casino, it was the largest in the world at that time, its architectural design was based on Los Angeles movie themes. 

In the fall of 1980, it suffered a major fire, the worst in Nevada's history, which destroyed much of its structure, killing about eighty-five people including guests and hotel employees. It was subsequently rebuilt in eight months.

It was sold in 1985 to its current owners, Bally's Entertainment Corporation, and renamed Bally's Las Vegas. It has been featured in several movies such as Honeymoon in Vegas (1993) and Leaving Las Vegas (1995).

Additionally, it hosted the Poker Tournament series (2006) and was featured in the video game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

It also served as the setting for the boxing match in the movie Rocky IV, where the American boxer lost his life.

The facility hosted the Jubilee theatrical show from 1981 to 2016.
